A sensitive perspective on exceptional places in Paris

Saint-Germain-des-Prés — Catherine’s Paris

Saint-Germain-des-Prés is not a neighbourhood you simply visit — it is one you inhabit. For those who know it intimately, it reveals itself slowly: through the scent of old bookshops on Rue de Buci, the quiet hum of a Tuesday morning at Café de Flore, the way light falls across the courtyard of a Haussmann building in late afternoon.

I have worked in this arrondissement for over fifteen years, and it continues to surprise me. It is at once one of the most storied quarters in Paris and one of the most alive — constantly renewing itself while remaining anchored to everything that makes it irreplaceable.
